LIMA, OH (WLIO) - One Ohio State Lima lecturer getting due recognition today for her teaching excellence.
Dr. Dawn Starr received the Provost's Award for distinguished teaching which was presented to her by her students and colleagues in a surprise setting. The award recognizes a maximum of 6 lecturers of other associated faculty members across the campuses of The Ohio State University for outstanding teaching. Students, faculty, and alumni put forward nominees and create a committee to choose the recipients, who are then recognized with a $5,000 honorarium. Dr. Starr has taught at OSU Lima since 2008 with her home department being philosophy and she also teaches ethics and logic courses. Starr and her fellow Buckeyes are proud to have one of Lima's campus members be recognized for such a prestigious award.
"I had the great fortune of actually watching her teach last spring and she is incredible in the classroom. She's one of the most empathetic, most innovative teachers that we have. And she is always willing to meet students where they are and to help them really kind of learn about sometimes difficult-to-talk-about subjects so she really is an empathetic leader, both in and outside of the classroom," commented Margaret Young, interim dean and director of the OSU Lima campus.
"The famous Hippocratic oath that medical professionals take to do, first do no harm, but also promote health. I see what I do in philosophy as having a similar oath and that's the oath to help people live the examined life. And I feel like, that is, if I can help people do that and, you know, help them in their journey to live the examined life, I feel like I will have made a meaningful contribution," stated Dr. Dawn Starr, philosophy lecturer at OSU Lima.
Dr. Starr joins two other Ohio State Lima lecturers who have won the Provost's Award, Ruth Kindler from chemistry and Anthony Shoup from engineering.
