OTTAWA, Ohio (WLIO) — The first fair of the season in our area is officially underway, bringing a week filled with fun, food, and 4-H projects.

The 170th Putnam County Fair kicked off Monday afternoon with the traditional bell ringing. State leaders and lawmakers issued proclamations to congratulate both the fair board and junior fair board for their hard work in preparing the event.

Putnam County fair opens with a week full of family fun and tradition

The 170th Putnam County Fair kicked off Monday afternoon with the traditional bell ringing.

Over its long history, the fair has continued to grow, adding new entertainment and events. Still, it’s the familiar traditions that keep Putnam County residents coming back year after year.

“First thing that comes to mind is the animals, right? Let's go see the animals. Let's see the kids that work hard to, you know, do their projects all year round, the still projects that we have in the in our merchants building or in our junior fair building. As well as, just the overall midway and who can go without a little bit of fair food, right?” said Dale Schulte, President of the Putnam County Fair Board.

Even though the fair began during a heat wave, organizers made sure visitors have places to cool off.

“It is hot. We're talking about maybe a little bit of a break mid week, hopefully. But we do have our event center that's air conditioned. You can step in there and check out the kids' projects and cool off. We do have a couple wonderful big old oak shade shade trees where a person could get out of the sun. And actually there's a very nice breeze out here. So if as long as the breeze is blowing and you're not directly in the sun, it's really not that bad,” added Schulte.

Tuesday is Kids Day at the Putnam County Fair. Children 16 and under will be admitted for free until 4 p.m.
