On Saturday Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Company hosted its annual birthday celebration, an event that ultimately helps give back to the community.
A dunk tank, bouncy house, face painting, and outdoor games were just some of the things families could participate in during the annual celebration block party in Bluffton.
And like every year, people had the opportunity to buy their favorite popcorn. Each year this event, which celebrates the namesake, Shirley Torsell's 97th birthday, raises money for literacy. The president and co-founder of the company said this cause would have been very important to Torsell.
“Shirley was a huge fan of books and reading to children so this year a hundred percent of our proceeds are going to the Lima Symphony Orchestra’s story time program,” said Pete Suter the co-founder and president of Shirley’s Gourmet Popcorn Company. “We’re super excited and we hope we can fund their program for an entire year.”
Symphony Storytime is a youth educational program that allows children to experience reading time while listening to live music.
