Students Are Recognized For Academic Achievements

Some Allen East students were recognized for their hard work Tuesday in a fun way.

It's called the Academic Lottery. It happens once a year in the spring for students who have had A's and B's and perfect attendance throughout the year.

A total of 237 students participated. That's 67 percent of their student body, according to school officials, a number they are pretty proud of. The items are donated by individuals, parents, organizations and businesses.

Students are entered every nine weeks - twice for all A's, and once for A's and B's. Prizes ranged from a beach ball all the way to a mini iPad. One school teacher says this is a fun way to recognize students for their academic achievement.

The Academic Lottery is held in honor of former teacher mister Donald Dunbar who started the tradition 27 years ago.
