The Summer Safety City Academy wraps up another year of teaching kids’ various ways to stay safe. Friday afternoon was the final group of graduates to get their certificates from safety city. Around 250 kids graduated this summer from the four weeks they held the academy. During the week, the students learn about how to deal with strangers, some self-defense moves, fire safety, and what to do if you come across a gun or an unfamiliar pet.
“These kids just soaked everything up, they have been so good,” says Eric Mericle LPD’s DARE Officer. “In only a weeks’ time, they learn so much and they are able to tell you what they learned which is absolutely fantastic. Knowing that this is the end of if it, it’s a sad feeling but I am excited for what they learned.”
Mericle says they only did four weeks this summer, because they wanted to ease back into the academy after COVID. But they are looking at adding more weeks next summer.
