LIMA, OH (WLIO) - No one truly knows what goes on in the mind of a person with dementia but a local healthcare facility is giving people a chance to experience a few symptoms.
The Springs of Lima has been hosting the "Virtual Dementia Tour". You are equipped with a pair of glasses that make it difficult to see clearly, a pair of gloves that hinder your ability to use your fingers, and a headset that has sounds that will distract you. You are then given a set of tasks to complete in 7 minutes. Let's just say those participating today didn't complete the tasks and say they now have a different perspective of what people with dementia are facing.
"It was more than I was able to really put, tolerate myself. It gave me some more empathy for people who have to actually deal with that and it kind of made me wonder are we actually caring for people with dementia the right way and responding to them the right way," said Carla Thompson, who did the virtual dementia tour.
"It was completely unexpected. So I'm new to the healthcare field, so I took this to try to understand what our residents go through and it was very humbling," commented Jen Fitzpatrick, who did the virtual dementia tour.
The Springs of Lima will be hosting the "Virtual Dementia Tour" every other month and invite anyone in the community to try it. You can find out more information by contacting them at 419-227-3661.
