LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Local agencies are keeping an eye on the nation's capitol as the government shutdown rolls on.

Calls have been coming in to Allen County Public Health asking about the status of the WIC program and whether funding will hold up. WIC provides food, infant formula and nutrition education to income-eligible pregnant women and mothers of young children.

Health commissioner Brandon Fischer says they've been told by state officials that the WIC program will continue to operate as normal into November.

"Don't skip an appointment because you think that there may be an impact to that; come and get your benefits, go shop, get your things that you need - formula, fruits, vegetables, and all the other benefits that you do have on WIC, we are also still able to load cards for new clients," Fischer said.

It's wait and see now whether the WIC program will continue past November if the shutdown continues. State carryover and rebate program funds can be tapped into but officials say they will only last so long.
