William White reflects on time with Coach Earle Bruce

OSU Lima looking to add to nearly $400,000 they have already raised from the past 14 years for the Spring for the Scholarships event.

On top of the fund for the scholarships, officials announced that they had five new endowments funds to help finance student scholarships. The keynote speaker for the evening was former Lima Senior, Ohio State, and NFL football player William White. This week, White did the opening prayer during the memorial service for his Ohio State coach, the late Earle Bruce. White said he learned something from Coach Bruce just before the final game of the 1987 season. Bruce was fired before Ohio State was to play Michigan, but was asked to stick around for the rest of the season. White and other players tried to get the university officials to change the mind about Bruce, but with no effect. But Bruce knew he had a task at hand and that was to beat Michigan.

“Still to come back and that whole week of practice and he never mentioned anything. He was still the same Earle, coaching with the same passion that he had. You know, that showed me something, that this man is for real and he is really genuine and it also showed me that it is not about me and it wasn’t about him. All the things that Coach Bruce did was really about him, it was about the players and the Ohio State University,” said William White, Former OSU and NFL Football Player.

After beating Michigan, Bruce called White into his office and gave him one more task to do as a Buckeye.

“He told me that I had to get my degree. I had an engineering major and he knew it was a 5-year program and he told me that you are going to get drafted in the NFL, but you have to come back here and get your degree. And when Coach Bruce tells you, you got to do something, you got to do it," added White.

Last year the Spring for Scholarship raised $35,000 to help the OSU Lima students.
