CLAYTON, Ohio (WLIO) — At Northmont High School, the Russia Raiders are heading to the state tournament for the first time in program history after a five-set classic against the defending Division VII state champion Fort Loramie.
In the opening set, Hazel Francis got things started for the Raiders with a quick strike to put Russia ahead 20–10. Fort Loramie fought back as Charleigh Albers found open space on a kill, and Corynn Hoelscher came up with a huge block at the net, but Russia held on to take the first set 25–15.
The second set turned into a battle. Albers continued to attack from the outside, while Celeste Borchers powered home another kill for the Raiders. Fort Loramie’s Jenna Hoying closed out the frame with a clutch point to even the match at one set apiece, 25–23.
From there, both teams traded blows in a thrilling back-and-forth match that went the distance. In the decisive fifth set, Francis delivered the final point as Russia edged Fort Loramie 17–15 to claim the regional title.
The Russia Raiders advance to their first-ever state semifinal, where they’ll meet Monroeville next Thursday at Butler High School.
