LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) – A man charged with shooting at a Bluffton police officer in 2021 has had those charges dropped due to a paperwork mix-up.
Judge Jeffrey Reed dismissed the case with prejudice last week against Ronald Powell, 53. Powell had been facing felonious assault and other charges. His attorney filed a motion to dismiss, arguing that Powell’s right to a speedy trial had expired.
Prosecutors claimed the necessary paperwork had been sent to the wrong location.
Powell was released from jail following the dismissal.
The charges stemmed from a 2021 incident in which Powell allegedly fired at law enforcement officers during a pursuit around Bluffton. No one was injured during the incident. Authorities say Powell evaded police, stole a car from a home in the area, and was later arrested in Michigan.
