Lima Kiwanis Club program helps adults with disabilities give back to community

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month, the Lima Kiwanis Club is highlighting its Aktion Club, a program designed to empower adults with developmental disabilities through service and community involvement.

The Aktion Club provides members with opportunities to volunteer, connect with others and showcase their abilities while making a meaningful impact. As part of the Kiwanis family of clubs, participants take part in service projects that support local organizations and individuals in need.

Members have volunteered with Our Daily Bread and Family Promise and most recently began working with Spreading the Love by making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for those in need. Organizers say the program helps fulfill a universal desire to contribute and belong.

“Human need for all of us is to is to do some service, you know, to care about others. And folks with disabilities also have that same desire to give back. And so the Kiwanis offers a wonderful opportunity through action club for adults with developmental disabilities to do service, to to do projects that help the community, or help maybe a population that is kind of near and dear to their heart,” said Anne Dunbar, intake coordinator with the Allen County Board of Developmental Disabilities.

The Aktion Club is a national Kiwanis initiative with chapters across the country, promoting inclusion and service. Later this month, members of the Lima club plan to visit the Coldwater Aktion Club to connect and share experiences.
