LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — An annual Memorial Day ceremony in Lima honored the nearly 1.4 million men and women nationwide who lost their lives while serving their country.
Veterans organizations and families of veterans gathered to lay wreaths around an American flag-draped casket in recognition of the ultimate sacrifice made by Americans throughout the nation’s 250-year history.
Organizers said they hope the annual tradition serves as a reminder of the cost of freedom in the United States and the sacrifices made by members of the military.
“Thank God there's always people that's going to step up and go into the service. Sometimes the civilians don't understand why we do what we do. We're there to protect the people and that's what it is. And always know that there's always someone that's going to lay down their life for you and that's what we're here for," said Bill King, adjutant for Allen County Disabled Veterans Chapter 19.
Lima Mayor Sharetta Smith and Allen County Commisioner Beth Seibert also issued proclamations in honor of Memorial Day.
