City of Lima's Rental Housing Unit Registration process is up and running

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - After more than 7 years of planning, the City of Lima is launching a new process to take stock of rental properties within the city.

The city council passed the legislation back in January, and the rental housing unit registration process is up and running. Any property owner who has rental units is required to register those units with the city. Whether it is one or 50 units, they must be registered. City officials say that 56% of the housing in the city is rental property. The new registration will provide information about the properties that will help keep track of the condition and ownership of the units.

"We want to make sure, as the mayor stated, that the rental housing units here in the city of Lima are safe, livable, and affordable. This program is a balanced legislation for both the tenants of the community and the landlords. It's very important. They've been working on this the past 7 years," explained Carmillia Zion, interim director of Housing & Neighborhoods.

There will be two workshops to help property owners fill out the rental housing unit registration. They will be on Saturday, June 1st and 22nd, in council chambers at the municipal building, 50 Town Square. You can find out more about the process online at https://www.limaohio.gov/890/Rental-Housing-Unit-Registration. There are specific deadlines for the number of units you own.
