Construction soon to begin on Wapak Road alignment on Allen County's west side

Mother Nature is forcing the realignment of a road in western Allen County.

Wapak Road just north of State Route 309 runs along the bank of the Ottawa River and in 2019 the road started to slide into the river. The road was closed for a period and then repaired. But county officials say you can’t fight the river, and to avoid the chance it will again fall into the river 500-feet of the road will be realigned west of its current location.

Allen County Engineer Brion Rhodes explained, “The current intersection is at about a 45-degree angle which is really hazardous as far as an intersection is concerned. So, the new intersection will be at a 90-degree angle and that will be much safer.”

The county received an Ohio Public Works zero percent loan for the 439-thousand-dollar project that will be paid back over 20 years. The project bid was awarded to the Shelly Company and construction will start soon.
