Demond Liles denied new sentencing hearing

A Lima man sent to prison for 25 years on drug related charges has been denied the chance to have a new sentencing hearing.

Demond Liles asked visiting Judge Frederick McDonald to consider a new sentencing hearing on four charges of trafficking cocaine with a vehicle. Judge Jeffrey Reed sentenced Liles in December of 2014 to 25 years in prison, with 24 of those years mandatory.

According to court documents, Liles' attorney Kenneth Rexford says that there are four reasons that his client should be re-sentenced, including accusing Judge Reed of giving African Americans convicted of drug crimes longer sentences than whites convicted of the same crimes. Judge McDonald says there is not sufficient facts to grant a re-sentencing hearing and denied the motion.
