LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Allen County is moving in the right direction economically, according to an outside economic and workforce development director who spoke at the Lima/Allen County Chamber of Commerce’s annual breakfast.

Rick Szabrak, economic and workforce development director for Fairfield County, told business and community leaders that manufacturing continues to be a cornerstone of the region’s success. He said Lima’s strong manufacturing base positions the area well for long-term growth and stability.

Lima has been ranked third in the nation for manufacturing among cities with populations of 150,000 or fewer and has 108% more manufacturing jobs than the average U.S. city. Many of those positions, Szabrak said, are careers capable of supporting families.

Economic development leader praises Allen County’s manufacturing strength

“Manufacturing wages here are fifth highest in the state. Manufacturing is a viable career. 17% of the jobs in Allen County are manufacturing jobs. So you know, the more students can can be exposed to manufacturing and can look at that as a viable pathway to start a career, take care of their families, take care of themselves, and it's great,” Szabrak said.

Allen County has also gained momentum through recent economic development projects, including the arrival of Target, an Amazon distribution center and a data center, among others.

Szabrak said maintaining that momentum requires careful planning and a forward-looking approach to ensure continued growth and workforce development in the region.
