LIMA, OH (WLIO) - At Mercy Health-St. Rita's, future physicians in the different residency programs are given a ton of opportunities to work with patients and their fellow residents alike. Our Katie Honigford spoke with one of those residents as part of our "Growing STEM" series.
Now a resident in family medicine, Lussier says that there's a lot of opportunities to grow in her field while in the program.
Resident physicians with Mercy Health-St. Rita's have the opportunity to learn about several different areas of medicine. From internal medicine to emergency medicine, one of those residents is Victoria Lussier, who knew that she wanted to be a physician since she was a child.
Now a resident in family medicine, Lussier says that there's a lot of opportunities to grow in her field while in the program.
"We see a lot of everything - we do some inpatient medicine, outpatient, we run through different specialties, like cardiology and pulmonology," said Lussier.

"All of the community preceptors and attendings are wonderful, and we’re very excited to teach residents and the next generation of doctors."
Family medicine residents at St. Rita's spend time in the main hospital as well as at the graduate medical education building and the different resources that are available there.

"Hospital we use our classrooms for didactics, and it’s kind of a nice place to get away the hustle and bustle of the hospital and just being in a quiet place together with just our co-residents," said Lussier. "We do have a pretty state-of-the-art sim lab where we can train codes, joint injections, skin incisions and repairs, things like that."
Family medicine residents are also on a rotation for part of their residency at the rural community clinic in Bluffton. The face-to-face time with patients is of course the big part of education for resident physicians, and her time with patients here is something that Lussier says has been a valuable experience.
"I guess I never really anticipated how much autonomy I would have with patients and how great the relationships would build so quickly," Lussier said. "I think a lot of that has to do with it being in Lima and at St. Rita’s."
