LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Local veterans departed Lima on Saturday afternoon to be recognized for their service with a special trip to Washington, D.C.
The group joined other veterans at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for a flight aboard two of the Air Force’s C-17 airplanes. Honor Flight has been called a trip of a lifetime for veterans who served between World War II and the Vietnam War.

After landing in Washington, D.C., they will be escorted to various monuments and ceremonies in the nation’s capital before returning to a big welcome home Sunday night. Veterans said they are glad to take part in this special one-day trip with each other.
“It's a chance to talk fellow veterans that have been in country and so, and also get a chance to see the monument, the memorial. So excited about those two. I was rejected. I started around 2019, covid hit, and so no flights were flying. So, this has really been an honor for me,” said Paul Gallagher, a Navy veteran.
The veterans will also be honored at a local welcome home ceremony Monday at noon at Lima’s American Legion Post 96 on South Shore Drive.
