Local heroes celebrated for protecting children in Allen County

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Community members gathered to celebrate those working to protect children during the 28th annual Community for Kids Luncheon, marking a milestone year for Allen County Children Services as it celebrates 80 years of service.

The annual event recognized individuals and organizations whose efforts have made a lasting impact on the lives of children across Allen County. Awards were presented to Kayla Rayl of the Allen County Sheriff's Office, Chad Kunkleman of the Lima Police Department, volunteers from Lima Baptist Temple, and social workers serving in school districts throughout the county.

Executive Director Sarah Newland said the event highlights the strength of a community committed to supporting its youngest members.

“We are so fortunate to live in a community where there are so many people who truly care about kids,” Newland said. “Each and every day, they’re looking out for kids, checking on them, making sure that they have what they need. It’s just great to get everyone in a room to celebrate that today.”

The luncheon not only honored those on the front lines of child welfare but also underscored the importance of collaboration among law enforcement, educators, volunteers and social service agencies.

Organizers said the continued support from the community plays a vital role in ensuring children in Allen County are safe, supported and given opportunities to succeed.
