CELINA, Ohio (WLIO) — Mercer County Sheriff Doug Timmerman reports that his office is investigating a fatal traffic crash that occurred Saturday, May 10, 2025. Mercer County received a 911 call at 3 p.m. regarding a crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 33 and Celina Mendon Road.
Deputies say that Topp stopped at the stop sign for Celina Mendon Road, then pulled into the path of the semi-tractor and trailer.
The investigation revealed that Eric Topp, 48, of Mendon, Ohio, was driving a 2005 white Cadillac southbound on Celina Mendon Road. James R. Roell, 62, of Wallingford, Kentucky, was driving a 2004 white Peterbilt semi-tractor and trailer eastbound on U.S. Route 33.
Deputies say that Topp stopped at the stop sign for Celina Mendon Road, then pulled into the path of the semi-tractor and trailer. Topp was pronounced deceased at the scene. Assisting at the scene were members of the Mendon Fire Department, Rockford Fire Department, Celina EMS, and MCERV.
The crash remains under investigation at this time and will be forwarded to the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office for review. This marks the second fatal traffic crash in Mercer County in 2025.
