LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) - Seventy-five middle schoolers from districts across the area spent the day learning about engineering.
The event, “Engineered 4-H Success,” is a partnership between Ohio State Lima and OSU Extension. Students rotated through hands-on stations focusing on robotics, machining and material science. Engineering faculty guided students through leadership and STEM-focused activities, including designing and testing their own rockets. Organizers say the goal is to spark an early interest in engineering and show students that STEM opportunities exist close to home.
“I think for a lot of these students, they might come in today having no idea at all, and they might leave completely interested in STEM or even more sure of what they want to do. So that’s really exciting — to give the middle schoolers a chance to have that recruitment experience, even though it's not the most pertinent thing right now for middle schoolers — but it is great to give them that opportunity,” said Emma Wurst, undergraduate recruiter at Ohio State Lima.
Ohio State Lima is set to host an Engineering Discovery Day the first weekend in March, where visitors can tour the facility and learn more about its programs. For more information, visit lima.osu.edu/visit.
