Ohio health officials expect a rise in respiratory viruses

LIMA, OH (WLIO) - Ohio health officials would like to see more people get vaccinated before the worst of the respiratory virus season gets here.

Ohio health officials expect a rise in respiratory viruses

The small wave of COVID cases that Ohio saw in August has taken a 35% drop in the first two weeks of October. But the heart of the respiratory virus season is still ahead of us, and health officials say that the state should expect some combination of flu, RSV, and COVID to increase. But the best way to protect yourself is by getting vaccinated, and the new COVID-19 vaccine will better protect you from the new variants, especially if you are 65 years old and older.

"So far about 14% of Ohioans 65 and older have, in fact, have received the new vaccine," says Dr. Bruce Vanderhoff, Ohio Department of Health. "I would encourage anyone who has not received these shots especially if you fall into a high-risk group to do so promptly in order to protect yourself and those around you before we get into the heart of respiratory virus season."

As of last week, 4% of all Ohioans have got their COVID-19 vaccine, if you are looking to get your contact your pharmacist, doctor, or county board of health.
