COLUMBUS, Ohio (WLIO) – Agriculture is Ohio’s No. 1 industry, and livestock production is a major contributor to that ranking. The state ranks in the top 10 nationally for hog and sheep production and is second in the country for chickens and eggs.
The need for veterinarians, especially those working with large animals, is growing in the Buckeye State. Ohio State University hopes to help meet that need.
During his State of the University address, President Ted Carter said the university plans to increase the number of veterinarians it graduates each year.
“Today, we produce about 165 veterinarians a year. We're the only veterinary medicine program within three states, by the way, and that program will be increased to more than 200 students graduating per year, and those students will be focused primarily on hopefully staying here in the state of Ohio,” says Pres. Ted Carter, The Ohio State University.
Carter also announced a plan to address another critical shortage — nursing. He wants to double the number of students in the nursing program to more than 300 a year.
