PUTNAM COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) - Putnam County third graders are learning valuable lessons that will stay with them for life.

Hundreds of students from across the county visit Ruth Gerding's farm for the annual Farm Safety Days. While the program does talk about safety around grain bins and farm equipment, the majority of the talks focus on general safety. Students learn about staying away from guns, to the dangers of prescription medication and chemicals, and electrical safety.

Putnam County third graders learn lifelong lessons at Farm Safety Days

Hundreds of students from across the county visit Ruth Gerding's farm for the annual Farm Safety Days.

Gerding says teachers and school officials tell about the value they see in the program, and the students' parents see it too.

"Last year, we had an individual call, and their daughter was in a car accident - she clipped a power pole, and she knew enough what to do in her vehicle from what she learned at the third grade level, so that was pretty impressive that seven years later, she was still using that information," said Gerding. "I chose the third grade because they're very, very interested and enthused about what they are learning. They know about this program when their first and second graders are ready, so they look forward to it."

This is the 26th year for the Putnam County Farm Safety Days.
