Women in the U.S. military have been officially barred from engaging in ground combat itself until now. Starting in January women across America will be able to apply for any job within the military that they qualify for. This allows women the opportunity to fill about 220,000 additional jobs that are currently limited to men, as long as they qualify and meet the standards. Defense Secretary Ash Carter has opened up all combat positions to women starting at the beginning of January. All branches of the military agreed with the decision except for the marines. They suggested some positions be designated for men only, but the policy will have no exceptions. U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown, a democrat from Ohio, applauds the decision.
