The students engaged in multiple engineering experiments like programming their own robots and creating their own paper rockets.

Led by professors from the Ohio Northern University College of Engineering, the students engaged in multiple engineering experiments like programming their own robots and creating their own paper rockets. After a few test runs, the students competed to see which group's rocket could come closest to a target distance.

The partnership between Ohio Northern University and Heir Force Community School has been one that makes an impact on the students and teaches them to use team-building skills and collaborate.

This was the third year that Heir Force Community School students have worked with the Ohio Northern University College of Engineering.

"Some of the main things was working as a team. So personally, our team, one person tried to do it all, but we had to tell them to help let other people do stuff. We're in middle school, and this peaks our expectations for college because we're in middle school and usually only high schoolers go to college visits," said Cale Hughes, 8th grader at Heir Force Community School.

"It's important for them to have practical experiences. So today the kids had an opportunity to do things like robotics, and they had to work in teams, and it had mazes that they had to figure out. It allowed them to use problem-solving abilities. It allowed them to experience teamwork. It allowed them to fail and then be able to make modifications and adjustments in order to succeed," said Dr. Willie Heggins, executive director of Heir Force Community School.
