Young campers all gathered around at the Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park on Tuesday morning for day 1 of "Rock On!" camp.

The three-day summer camp is a creative and fun way for kids to get introduced to the world of geology and understand how the rocks and soils that make up our land help determine where our animals, plants, and all other living things choose to inhabit. Campers ages 7 through 9 will learn the difference between a rock and a mineral and how rocks are made and constantly changing while doing some fun hands-on experiments and outdoor activities along the way.

"I want kids to have a basic understanding of things. I want them to get excited. They don't have to remember everything, but I want this to help build a foundation, and I want them to understand the importance of geology going forward and help apply it to other areas of their lives. Geology is everywhere in our lives. If it can't be grown, it has to be mined. We got to know where all of our basic materials are coming from," explained Lindsey Gallaugher, a naturalist at Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park District.

Campers ages 7 through 9 will learn the difference between a rock and a mineral and how rocks are made and constantly changing.

"Learn about what rocks can actually do for the environment and learn how to study rocks and how to know what rocks are with just the naked eye," said Kenlee Bright, a camper.

"There are minerals and rocks. The difference is that minerals would be made out of the same thing. Like kisses, if it was all chocolate, that's a mineral. But if it's made out of different things, it's a rock," said Jack Bright, a camper.

To close out Tuesday's activities, the campers went through a series of "STEAM stations" that involved science, technology, engineering, and math. To learn more about activities and programs offered by the park district, visit https://www.jampd.com/.
