Superior Credit Union and the Allen County OSU Extension held their annual Superior Financial Education Day today from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UNOH Event Center. The event aimed to provide informative and financial education programs to high school students from the area.

"We have one that the UNOH admissions office puts on. It kind of gives the students some information about picking a college and what kind of goes into that. Then, the second presentation we have is with some financial advisors with Superior, and it kind of talks about investments and how that all works," stated Chandler Clarkson, marketing and member experience coordinator at Superior.

Several schools attended the event, including Temple Christian, LCC, Perry, Bluffton, Allen East, Parkway, Delphos St. John's, and Jefferson. The juniors and seniors participated in the OSU Extension Office's Real Money Real World program, which provided them with hands-on experience in making financial decisions, evaluating the consequences of their decisions, and understanding the cost of living on their own.

"You had to do the health and wellness part. You had to do a contribution portion, and then, like communication, different things like that. I was surprised by the amount of things you have to buy in the real world. Obviously, I knew, like insurance and a house and a car, but there's a lot of other stuff that I really didn't know you had to buy," explained Trent Rollins, senior at Parkway High School.

The students also learned about financial planning, budgeting, credit scores, and how to choose a college that best suits their needs. The juniors and seniors also received valuable advice from the UNOH admissions office on time management and prioritizing their social lives in school or the workforce.

"They said just to make sure that you're comfortable with the number of people that you're going to be going to college with, and whether or not you want to be in the city or a more rural area and to have fun but also get what you need to get done and definitely talk to the admissions counselors because they're there to help you out," commented Devan Foster, senior at Allen East High School.

By attending events like Superior Financial Education Day, students are better equipped to prepare for the next phase of their lives.
