MERCER COUNTY, Ohio (WLIO) - Tri Star Career Compact held an open house Friday evening for its Project House, a student-built home constructed during the school year.

Open house showcases student construction project

The construction students begin the two-year program as juniors, learning the skills needed to build a home and drafting a blueprint for the final design.

A group of nine seniors, with help from the junior class, spent the academic year building the house from the ground up. The construction students begin the two-year program as juniors, learning the skills needed to build a home and drafting a blueprint for the final design. On the first day of their senior year, construction begins. The program is designed to prepare students for immediate entry into the workforce after high school.

"These guys are from nine different schools. They're from all around the area, just the camaraderie of seeing nine different groups of guys that never knew each other a year ago, and now they're building a house, and they take a lot of pride in it. If not, it wouldn't be such a nice house. They're going out, I'd say 80% of them are going out into the field, working construction in some sort. They've done so much stuff here. They know what they like, so this gives them advantage. So they don't go try to find different jobs before they find what they really like, they've already went through it," said Brett McGillvary, construction instructor at Tri Star Career Compact.

An auction for the home will be held at 7 p.m. June 5. For more information, visit Tri Star’s website.
