ALLEN COUNTY, OH (WLIO) - It is a pilot program that is a win-win for both age groups involved.
The West Ohio Community Action Partnership is looking for senior volunteers to read to youngsters in their Head Start classrooms. That have been able to place a senior with a class and it is going well. They hope to get at least 12 people willing to volunteer some of their time to the children, and they have teamed up with the Area Agency on Aging 3 to recruit area seniors.
"The more people we can get into our classrooms and work individually with the kids and reading in small groups and asking them questions," said Janet Buchanan, education coordinator for WOCAP. "Just giving them that individual attention, that's the first goal. The second goal is intergenerational, getting seniors in and working with our littles."
Those who are interested can contact Miranda van Rooyen at (419) 204-4303, or email her at mvanrooyen@psa3.org. They will do a background check on those volunteering.
An informational seminar is scheduled for Wednesday, December 14th at Old Barn starting at 11 am.
