SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP, OH (WLIO) - When a family known for helping others fell on hard times themselves, the Shawnee community stepped up to repay their kindness.
A month ago, Ashley Carnes of the Fat Kid BBQ food truck and her son Blake were injured in a serious car crash, so friends and family organized the Carnes Christmas Fundraiser to help with their medical bills. There were a variety of festive ways to raise money, like cookie decorating, and also several free activities like crafts and a photo shoot with Santa. The family has used their business to contribute to plenty of benefits in the past, so it wasn't difficult to find people who wanted to help them in return.
"It really does take a village, or as our shirts say, 'it takes a tribe." Just so many people reached out and said can I help, how can I help, can I set up, can I donate? People that I didn't even reach out to, people that hunted me down and said, hey I heard about this, what can I do to help? Without those people, this wouldn't be possible," said Jennifer Green, a friend of the family who helped put together the fundraiser.
People close to the family are already planning more fundraisers to support the Carnes' as they continue to heal.
