Shoppers pack Lima Menards as Black Friday kicks off holiday buying rush

LIMA, Ohio (WLIO) — Around 149 million Americans were expected to get some holiday shopping done on Black Friday.

Black Friday once referred to the day retailers’ accounts went from being “in the red” to “in the black.” Now, it has become known for major holiday deals — and at Menards on Friday morning, shoppers lined up early to start checking items off their lists.

Staff began setting up for the big day on Monday, but preparations for Black Friday have been underway for months.

“We had a lot of traffic this morning. Still plenty of stuff on sale right now, so we've only sold out of a few items, so still plenty of stuff. We got another ad actually starting tonight or tomorrow morning, so there's gonna be a lot more Christmas items on sale. With that, the team's excited, and honestly, all the customers that have been here today so far have been pleasant and no issues. Everything's been great,” said Donald Pope, general manager of the Lima Menards.

Many shoppers are also turning online to snag holiday savings. Last year on Black Friday, nearly $11 billion was spent online — a 10% increase from 2023.
